Backhill Tunnel - Science Vale UK

Backhill Tunnel

Reopening the disused Backhill Tunnel to cyclists and walkers. A former railway tunnel is now a vital link for people who live and work near the Milton Park and Milton Interchange enterprise zones.

The disused Backhill Tunnel had been closed to the public for many years.  In 2017 we reopened it to cyclists and pedestrians creating a new link between Milton Park and the north side of the A4130.

The work involved laying a surface suitable for cyclists and pedestrians plus installing lighting, whilst improving the fencing to keep people off the railway line.  In early 2018 work will start on creating a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists across the A4130, adjacent to the tunnel.

When the whole project is complete, we’ll have a new north-south connection between Milton Park and the A4130.  The tunnel will make it easier for people to walk or cycle between the Milton Park and Milton Interchange enterprise zones and the residential areas of North West Valley Park and Valley Park.

It will also speed up the cycling time for commuters and scientists between Abingdon, Culham Science Centre and Harwell Campus.
