Sustainable travel across Science Vale UK made quicker benefiting thousands of workers

Backhill Tunnel – which links Milton Park to the adjacent A4130 in west Didcot and the houses and amenities at Great Western Park – was officially opened on the 17 November by Didcot and Wantage MP Ed Vaizey.

The redeveloped tunnel now provides a lit pedestrian and cycle link, joining the northern side of the A-road directly with Milton Park.

Its completion now enables 9,000 people working at Milton Park to either cycle or walk to-and-from their place of work.  The tunnel will also allow better access to amenities at Milton Gate, including the new four-star Milton Marriott hotel, due to open in summer 2018.

The benefits of this new route extends to those living at Great Western Park and once built, Valley Park and North West Valley Park.  A shorter, more sustainable commute is now possible for all of the residents working at Milton Park and further afield at the Culham Science Centre.

A second phase of the project – which will see the creation of a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists across the A4130, adjacent to the tunnel – is set to be completed by March 2018.
